Pre-emergent vs. post-emergent weed control

Pre-emergent: prevention

Applied before weed seeds sprout, it stops many of them from establishing. It has to be in place before germination and doesn't kill weeds that are already growing.

Post-emergent: targeted treatment

Applied to weeds that are already up and actively growing. It works best on young weeds, and the product depends on the weed and your grass type.

Common weeds in Charlotte-area lawns

Crabgrass

A summer annual grassy weed that sprouts in spring as the soil warms. It takes over thin, sunny spots and the edges of driveways and sidewalks.

Dandelion, clover and wild violet

Broadleaf perennials that come back from their roots. Wild violet is especially stubborn and often needs repeat treatments.

Henbit, chickweed and annual bluegrass

Cool-season weeds that sprout in fall, then show up through winter and early spring, especially in dormant Bermuda and Zoysia.

Nutsedge

Bright green and grass-like, it grows faster than the lawn in summer and favors wet spots. It isn't a true grass and needs its own treatment.

Spring and fall prevention

Spring

Pre-emergent goes down in late winter to early spring, before the soil warms enough for crabgrass to sprout. A follow-up application helps extend control into summer.

Fall

A second round of prevention targets winter weeds such as henbit, chickweed and annual bluegrass before they come up.

Pre-emergent also stops grass seed from growing. When a tall fescue lawn is being overseeded in fall, prevention is timed or adjusted so the new seed can establish.

Why treatments depend on your lawn

Your grass type

Some products that are safe on Bermuda can injure tall fescue, and the reverse. We choose treatments labeled for your turf.

The weather

Heat and drought stress grass, so some treatments wait for a cooler stretch. Rain soon after an application can reduce how well it works.

The weed's growth stage

Young, actively growing weeds are much easier to control than mature ones. Treated weeds often take several days to a couple of weeks to die back.

Why a recurring program works

Weeds arrive in waves through the year. Seeds blow in, wash in and can sit in the soil for years, so a single treatment rarely solves the problem for long.

Regular visits catch each wave at the right time, and a thick lawn is the best long-term defense. That's why our weed control is paired with seasonal fertilization in every plan, all part of our year-round lawn care program.

Qualifying weed-control callbacks

Every plan includes free callbacks for qualifying weed issues between scheduled visits. Plus and Premium customers get priority callbacks (not same-day service).

Results depend on weather, watering, mowing and lawn condition. No lawn can be guaranteed completely weed-free.
